As his country has been mauled by Russia for exactly 32 days now, Ukraine’s courageous President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a desperate plea for the West.
He is asking the US-led NATO alliance for emergency military aid in order to be able to defend the forces of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
Western Military Aid: Vital, Yet Far from Enough
NATO, the mutual defense military pact of 30 countries – the United States, Canada, and 28 European allies – has been instrumental in standing up to the former Soviet Union during the Cold War.
However, while its main reason for existing is to protect freedom and democracy from Russian militarism and totalitarianism, during the current Russian invasion of Ukraine, NATO has done surprisingly little to support Ukrainians’ fight for survival.
Instead, the bulk of western military aid to Ukraine has been provided by about half of NATO member states acting in their individual capacity.
Meanwhile, the alliance has been careful not to come into a direct clash with Russian forces; that could cause Putin not start not just World War III, but even a doomsday nuclear war that could destroy humankind.
Nevertheless, as Russians have been failing militarily, they have started to engage in a staggering number of war crimes against Ukrainian civilians.
This prompted Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy to issue a new desperate call for America and its allies to provide his nation with more tangible military aid.
Out of fear of nuclear war with Putin, NATO has refused to heed Zelenskyy’s previous calls for intervention. First, he asked for US and allied militaries to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
Then, he asked for the transfer to Ukraine of Soviet-era military equipment from former communist NATO countries, such as Poland.
The Biden administration has shied away from both of those steps, even as the Poles offered to give up three dozen Soviet-made MiG-29 fighter jets for transfer to Ukrainians.

‘What is NATO Waiting for in Ukraine?!’
In his latest video address on Saturday night, Zelenskyy was visibly angry there isn’t greater western military aid arriving.
“Is NATO run by Russia?” he asked bluntly, wondering why the nations who are champions of freedom and democracy – such as the United States – have been waiting 31 days to provide Ukraine with tiny fractions of their total stockpiles of tanks and fighter jets.
“What is NATO waiting for,” the Ukrainian leader wondered as he underscored the unspeakable bravery and heroism of Ukraine’s defenders.
He mentioned the besieged Sea of Azov in the city of Mariupol, where a handful of Ukrainians are still holding off the attacks of Putin’s brutes from all sides.
The city of formerly almost 500,000 people has been left with no water, food, electricity, or heating for several weeks now. Russians have been killing civilians indiscriminately, including young children.
Zelenskyy’s begging for bigger NATO military aid could be problematic, considering the latest giant diplomatic mess that Biden stirred as he called for Putin’s ouster in a speech in Poland.
