Feds Subpoena NYC Mayor Eric Adams in Expanding Turkey Campaign Probe

2

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, his campaign, and City Hall have been hit with subpoenas from federal prosecutors as part of a widening investigation into potential illegal activities connected to his 2021 mayoral campaign. The probe is particularly focused on Adams' ties to Turkey and whether Turkish nationals funneled illegal donations into his campaign coffers. The subpoenas, issued by a Manhattan federal grand jury last month, seek a broad range of materials, including text messages, communications, and financial records.

This federal inquiry, which has been ongoing since at least June, centers on a variety of potentially problematic activities linked to Adams' campaign. Among these are multiple trips Adams made to Turkey, significant donations from Turkish business executives with ties to a Brooklyn-based construction company, and allegations that Adams helped resolve fire safety violations at the Turkish consulate in Manhattan. Additionally, the investigation is scrutinizing whether Adams received upgrades on flights with Turkish Airlines as part of the alleged quid pro quo arrangements.

The mayor’s legal team, led by his former chief counsel Brendan McGuire, has stated that Adams is fully cooperating with the investigation. McGuire emphasized that their internal review of the allegations has uncovered no evidence of illegal conduct on the mayor's part. Despite these assertions, the investigation continues to deepen, with prosecutors expanding their search to include records from Adams' current and former staffers at City Hall who were involved in his campaign.

The investigation's implications are significant, as federal grand juries possess the power to issue indictments, potentially leading to serious legal consequences for the mayor and his associates.

However, as of now, Adams has not been publicly accused of any wrongdoing, and his office has maintained that the subpoenas are merely tools to gather evidence rather than an indication of guilt.

Adams, a former NYPD captain, has consistently stated his willingness to cooperate with law enforcement. His spokesperson reiterated that the mayor remains committed to ensuring a swift conclusion to the investigation. The expanding nature of this probe, however, suggests that the legal scrutiny facing Adams and his campaign is far from over.

The connection between Adams and Turkey has been a topic of discussion since the campaign, with the mayor attending nearly 80 events related to the country. This long-standing relationship is now under the microscope as investigators seek to determine whether these connections crossed legal boundaries during his bid for office.

The outcome of this investigation could have substantial repercussions not only for Adams but also for his administration and its future in New York City. As the federal probe continues, all eyes will be on whether any indictments or further legal actions arise from the deepening investigation into Adams' campaign and his ties to Turkey.
