McCarthy Endorses Idea to Designate Mexican Drug Cartels as Terrorist Organizations

To combat Mexican drug traffickers, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy proposed embedding the military along the U.S.-Mexico frontier.

McCarthy endorsed employing Pentagon technology to combat traffickers in an exclusive, in-depth video interview with Breitbart News. He also emphasized the United States government should officially designate Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.

The discussion covered a variety of subjects, including the Chinese Communist Party, the debt limit, and the publication of surveillance recordings on January 6.

Human Trafficking

McCarthy’s recommendation followed the kidnapping and execution of two of the four Americans abducted by cartels in Mexico.

McCarthy noted the incident occurred close to the U.S. border and stated the U.S. must take action to secure its border because drug cartels generate billions of dollars through human trafficking and firearms.

He expressed concern regarding the cartels’ disregard for human life and Americans.

McCarthy did not specifically support a proposal from Reps. Michael Waltz (R-FL) and Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) that authorized military force to combat the cartels, but he did support the concept in general.

The Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) against the cartels proposed by Representatives Waltz and Crenshaw would permit using military resources, such as satellites and cyber assets, to disrupt cartel activities.

The Mexican President

In January, Trump also published a policy video stating that if re-elected president, he would handle the cartels similarly to ISIS.

Waltz noted his proposal is gaining traction among his Republican colleagues in the House. He and other advocates have discussed with Democrats in both the House and Senate how to enact anti-cartel legislation.

The notion of American officials deploying the military on the U.S.-Mexico frontier to combat the cartels has infuriated Mexican leaders.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador voiced his vehement opposition to the concept. He even threatened to intervene in U.S. elections to aid Democrats and oppose Republicans if the Republican Party successfully promotes it.

McCarthy’s public support increases the likelihood that Congress will eventually act on this front, even if President Biden is slow or unresponsive to public demands for action against multibillion-dollar international criminal organizations.
