New Poll Poses Problems For Mitch McConnell

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is not the most popular politician these days. Many Americans view him as dishonest and as a person who doesn’t really work on behalf of the country.

Even amongst Republicans, there are some very negative views about McConnell, how he operates, and the impacts of his decisions in Congress. Certain GOP members, for instance, note that the Senate Minority Leader has a tendency to cut various deals with Democrats when it suits him.

Others have slammed McConnell for being unwilling to take the measures that are in the best interest of the Republican Party, even when it means putting his own agenda aside.

Now, a new poll is out and it doesn’t bode well for the Senate Minority Leader, according to Washington Examiner.

Breaking Down This Latest Poll

A poll conducted by YouGov and The Economist reveals that 64% of Republicans think it’s time for McConnell to step down from office. This comes after the Kentucky congressman was out of office for several weeks, due to a recent fall.

McConnell has since returned, much to the chagrin of most Republicans who believe it’s time for someone else to lead.

This same poll also revealed that six in ten Democrats are likewise in favor of McConnell stepping down from Congress. However, the Senate Minority Leader has made no indication that he plans to resign anytime soon.

A Broader Conversation

Lately, Americans have been having talks about the pros and cons of allowing a new generation of political leaders to take the reins. McConnell, Biden, and Pelosi are each in their 80s.

In Congress, many Americans are supportive of not just term limits, but also age limits. There’s a school of thought that says a leader can become complacent when they hold onto power for decades and decades, longer than many Americans have been alive.

So far, it doesn’t appear as though Mitch McConnell is planning on going anywhere. How long this lasts remains to be seen.
