According to a statement released by CJTF-OIR, neither civilians nor coalition aircraft or assets were damaged in any way during the mission.
The detention of the ISIS leader marks yet another successful operation carried out by the United States against leaders of the terrorist group.
Biden’s Remark and February Raid
The White House announced in February that another senior member of ISIS had been taken out in Syria.
In the release, President Biden said, “Last night, at my command, U.S. military personnel in the northwest of Syria effectively executed a counterterrorism mission to safeguard American citizens, our allies, and to make the world a better place.”
“Thanks to the competence and bravery of the military, we were able to remove Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi from the battlefield.”
“He was the commander of ISIS. The mission has been completed successfully and no Americans were injured.” Biden continued by praying God would watch over our service members.
The operation in February took place at one in the morning when U.S. commandos jumped out of a chopper and encircled a residential building in the neighborhood of Atmeh.
“At the very beginning of the operation, the terrorist target detonated a bomb, which resulted in the deaths of the terrorist, as well as members of his own household, including women and children.”
According to a U.S. official who spoke with The Wall Street Journal, “this seems to be the same heinous terrorist approach we saw in the 2019 operation that assassinated [Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi].”
Baghdadi took his own life in October 2019 under the administration of Donald Trump, during a mission carried out by the elite Delta Force.
It was found at the time that Baghdadi was a primary target for the U.S. Central Command and the attack was the climax of an intense attempt to bring him to justice.
