Russian representatives in the US have voiced their criticism of the American administration, labeling it as “duplicitous.”
They also accused the US of committing its own injustices, particularly in Iraq, Yugoslavia, Libya, and Vietnam, while disregarding its own wrongdoings.
In addition, the Russian representatives likewise pointed out the lack of consistency in the US government’s methodology, as it condemns the actions of other countries, but neglects to hold itself responsible.
Russia Accused the US of Devising “Shameful Tactics”
This is a recurring theme, as the US has faced comparable accusations in the past.
The US persistently expressed its stance against the ICC and chose not to ratify the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC, due to concerns about the possibility of American citizens facing prosecution.
Despite this, the US has demonstrated prompt support for ICC investigations into the actions of other nations and their leaders.

The Russian Embassy’s statement also leveled accusations against the US for adopting “shameful tactics” to hinder the investigation of its citizens by international organizations.
This includes implementing economic sanctions on ICC leaders, including former Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, who was investigating American actions in Afghanistan.
The sanctions referred to in the statement were put in place by the prior administration under President Trump, targeting Bensouda and another ICC official for their efforts to scrutinize US personnel.
These sanctions encompassed limitations on visas for those involved in the investigation.
Countries Remain Wary of the ICC’s Jurisdiction
This circumstance showcases the intricate and conflicting interests of nations regarding international criminal justice.
Although the ICC was established with the honorable aim of holding individuals responsible for the gravest crimes, such as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, it continues to be a contentious organization.
Numerous countries, including the US, remain wary of its jurisdiction and capability to function independently and equitably.

However, those who support the ICC contend that it is essential to hold individuals responsible for the most heinous crimes, regardless of their status or nationality.
The ICC represents a significant advancement towards achieving justice for victims of these crimes and serves as a deterrent against future atrocities.
