A Washington state woman pursued a child on a bicycle with her car, driving onto the sidewalk in a residential neighborhood before offering authorities a bizarre explanation involving her pets.
Caught on Camera
Security footage captured 56-year-old Wendy Clemente honking at a juvenile riding a dirt bike near her driveway in Cheney, located in the 7500 block of South Fruitvale Road. The silver Ford Focus swerved toward the child, narrowly missing him as he moved out of the way. After a brief exchange of words, Clemente turned her vehicle around and drove onto the sidewalk, chasing the child while barely avoiding a fire hydrant and residential landscaping. A neighbor’s voice rang out during the incident, screaming in horror as the chase unfolded before the car returned to the street.
Investigation and Arrest
When Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, they investigated a separate burglary report approximately one mile away. The caller reported seeing someone attempting to open doors on live security camera footage. Officers located Clemente and her vehicle, placing her under arrest for allegedly attempting to run over the child while under the influence. During the arrest process, she attempted to kick a patrol deputy. Clemente told investigators she had taken her dogs for a ride and was looking for other dogs to socialize with, claiming complete ignorance about the child or any pursuit. She acknowledged drinking alcohol before the incident.
Charges Filed
Authorities booked Clemente into Spokane County Jail on charges of first-degree attempted assault, driving under the influence, and criminal trespass. She was later released on her own recognizance. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office released the video footage to the public on Monday, documenting the April incident that endangered a child in a quiet residential area.
