Grand Jury Shadows California’s Power Couple

California Governor Gavin Newsom — who hasn’t released his tax returns in years despite promising to do so annually — is now suddenly “preparing” to make them public as a federal probe into his wife’s finances heats up.

Story Snapshot

  • Federal investigators have spent about a year looking into the taxes and nonprofits tied to Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, based on whistleblower complaints filed with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento.
  • Newsom broke his own pledge to release tax returns every year — his last public filing covered 2020, shared in March 2022 while he ran for re-election.
  • Newsom blames Trump for the probe, but sources told multiple news outlets the investigations started from California whistleblowers, not Washington political appointees.
  • Newsom’s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, already pleaded guilty to federal campaign finance fraud — a separate case that adds to the cloud over his inner circle.

A Federal Probe Newsom Can’t Ignore

Federal investigators have been looking into Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s taxes and nonprofits for roughly a year. Two sources familiar with the matter confirmed the probe to multiple outlets, including ABC10 and the BBC. [4] The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento is handling the investigations, which grew out of whistleblower complaints. Grand jury subpoenas have been issued, though officials have not said who received them. No charges have been filed and no wrongdoing has been formally alleged.

Siebel Newsom runs The Representation Project, a nonprofit focused on feminist media. A film company she owns, Girls Club Entertainment, also appears as a contractor on that nonprofit’s tax returns. [1] Investigators are also looking at donations made to her nonprofits through “behested payments” — a California mechanism that lets elected officials direct unlimited donations to outside groups. [2] That funding channel has drawn serious scrutiny as part of the broader inquiry.

Newsom’s Broken Promise on Tax Transparency

Newsom once boasted he would be the first California governor to release his tax returns every single year. He signed a state law requiring gubernatorial candidates to disclose five years of returns. But he stopped following through. His last public filing covered the 2020 tax year, released in March 2022 when he was running for re-election. [11] That return showed the couple earned nearly $1.5 million and paid about $480,000 in taxes. Since then, his office has refused to hand over any additional returns.

Now, with federal agents questioning friends, family members, and former staffers — and reportedly visiting his home — Newsom says he is “preparing” to release the long-delayed returns. [10] The timing is hard to miss. For years, Newsom faced no serious political pressure to follow his own pledge. The moment a federal probe surfaces, suddenly transparency becomes a priority. That pattern raises fair questions about whether this move is genuine accountability or damage control.

Newsom Cries Politics, But the Facts Tell a Different Story

Newsom went on offense in a social media video, claiming Trump “directed his Department of Justice to investigate me” as part of a political vendetta tied to his likely 2028 presidential run. [1] He accused investigators of “abusing the grand jury process” and called the probe a “hit list” for Trump critics. But sources who spoke to the BBC, ABC10, and others directly contradicted that narrative — saying the investigations came from California whistleblowers and local sources, not orders from Washington. [5]

Adding to the credibility problem, Newsom’s former chief of staff Dana Williamson pleaded guilty in May to federal charges tied to a campaign finance fraud scheme. [5] Newsom’s office says Williamson’s crimes were “completely unrelated” to the governor. That may be true, but it does not make the broader picture look cleaner. A sitting governor whose former top aide is a convicted federal felon, whose wife is under active federal investigation, and who broke his own transparency pledge for years has a lot of explaining to do — and releasing tax returns now, under pressure, is only a start.
